CHARLOTTE – NASCAR's number 24 driver will soon be honored on a section of Interstate 85 near the Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Tuesday, Mecklenburg County Commissioners approved the designation of the stretch of I-85 on the Mecklenburg-Cabarrus County line as "Jeff Gordon Expressway".
The "85" idea came about since Gordon recently took home the checkered flag for the 85th time in his career. However, Gordon's NASCAR triumphs were just part of the designation as he was also hailed for charitable work at his Children's Foundation and Children's Hospital.
"It's been very rewarding,” said Gordon. “Something that you go through and the days, and you go to hospitals and you meet children and it breaks your heart and you want to do more."
The NC DOT's sign committee and full board must still rubber stamp the Jeff Gordon Expressway designation on I-85 before markers go up for drivers.
