WILMINGTON -- Three days of nearly non-stop basketball at Laney High School and Holly Ridge Middle School finished up Wednesday at the first-ever Fred Lynch Invitational. The event was established by Laney's new head men's basketball coach Nathan Faulk.

"We wanted to honor Coach Lynch who coached her for 26-27 years and also bring great basketball to Wilmington," said Faulk

Lynch, the event's namesake, stepped down from the head coach position in March after 26 years on the sidelines.

"It's a great honor to have the tournament named after me. I am happy that Coach Faulk was willing to do something like that," he said.

The tournament featured 18 high school teams from the Wilmington area, the Triangle and Sandhills. Each team played at least seven scrimmages over three days.

"It's a great experience for the kid. You try to get as many kids on the court as you can just to prepare yourself for winter," said Bryn McSwain, head basketball coach for Ashley High School.

While Faulk is using this event to work with his new squad for the first time, his goal is to make the Fred Lynch invitational an annual event. ClientIP: UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
