GREENSBORO -- Donald Trump received an enthusiastic welcome Friday at the North Carolina Republican Party Convention, which saw record attendance.

"That means you're going to raise more money than you ever anticipated, you're going to use the money wisely, and you will defeat Barack Obama,'' said the real estate mogul and reality TV star.

More than 1,700 delegates and other party faithful from all over the state are on hand for the weekend convention at the Koury Convention Center. Some, like Wayne County Delegate Ann Sullivan, were showing their party colors. She was wearing a vest covered with GOP pins and button.

"I like to have all my buttons, it lets you know where you stand," she said.

The convention was called to order by state Party Chairman Robin Hayes.

"Folks, we've got a job to do, we have got a mission to accomplish, and that's why we're here," said Hayes.

Part of the business included announcing the number of delegates from each county and making some revisions. One lengthy and important part of the convention was voting on the state Republican Party platform.

''It is things that we want to do, for officials it's things they should do, and for the public it's a statement on our position as North Carolina Republicans,'' said Mary Summa, who's on the party's Platform Committee.

County delegates will also vote on delegates to the national GOP convention.

Trump encouraged conventiongoers to take action at the polls.

"America today is clearly missing quality leadership like never, ever before," said Trump.

Two former presidential candidates, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty will speak at the convention on Saturday.
