DURHAM—A neighborhood is in shock after a former Durham police officer is charged with his wife's murder.

Durham authorities found Maxine Burns, 50, stabbed to death at a home on Cedarwood Drive Friday night.

They charged her husband, 51-year old Timothy Burns, with the murder. After discovering the victim's body, police say they took the suspect to the hospital.

There have not been any details released as to why he was hospitalized.

Neighbors say they never expected this to happen.

“As far as I know from the neighbors, they say they had a lot of dispute but I've never known them to have violence in the house at the time that I've known her,” said neighbor Ida Brown.

Authorities say Timothy Burns left the police department the 1990s. ClientIP: UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
