FAYETTEVILLE -- One of the Fayetteville Police Department's own employees has been arrested.
Nina Megan Joyce, 33, has been charged with ten felony counts for trafficking prescription drugs. Joyce, a civilian crash investigator, was arrested Monday afternoon.
Megan Joyce has been with the Fayetteville Police Department since 2007. Chief Harold Medlock says the investigation into her abuse of prescription drug medications started last week when the narcotics department was notified by a local Fayetteville pharmacy.
Chief Medlock says its normal for a pharmacy to notify the department if they are suspicious and after a thorough investigation, there was probable cause that criminal activity was taking place.
Joyce is charged with ten felony charges of trafficking prescription medication, prescriptions for several drugs including hydrocodon [and] oxicodon.
Investigators say she was found with prescriptions for up to 600 doses of medication.
Chief Harold Medlock says it is never easy to investigate a member of the department.
"We put a lot of trust in ourselves and each other and the community puts a lot of trust in us as well. It's a pretty devastating thing to find one of your employees engaged in criminal behavior," said Chief Harold Medlock, Fayetteville Police Department.
Joyce submitted her letter of resignation effective immediately.
Her husband Lt. Todd Joyce is the public information officer for the Fayetteville Police Department.
