WILSON, N.C. --The NAACP is fighting for the freedom of a Wilson native they say unjustly  got life in prison.

John McNeil shot and killed a white man, who he testified was threatening he and his son with a knife on their property.

The McNeils lived in Georgia when it happened and now, his wife is asking for his release.

“As Father's Day approaches, I stand for my sons; sons whose father was taken at an important time in their life; a father who was not only loving and kind and supportive but was also teaching them on how to be a man,” said Anita McNeil.

According to the NAACP, the John McNeil defense committee  hired a lawyer in Georgia who recently argued to an appellate judge that there is evidence of unfairness in his trial.

The court's decision is pending. ClientIP: UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
