SMITHFIELD, N.C. – An Smithfield woman is dead after being hit by a truck in a Wal-Mart parking lot Saturday. Two other people were hurt in the same incident are being hospitalized at Johnston Memorial center.
The accident happened around noon at the Wal-Mart on Bright Leaf Boulevard in Smithfield.
Tina Grady was coming out of that store at the time, and saw the three women on the ground.
"One of the girls was severely hit," Grady said. "She was very blue when I saw her and I had the feeling that she had already perished."
Smithfield Police say that woman was 73-year-old Lois Shannon, who died at the hospital.
Investigators say the two others who were hit were 53-year-old Debra Holmes and 35-year-old Jeanna Holley, both of Smithfield.
Police say the women were hit by the Chevy Silverado driven by 95-year-old Benjamin Moye of Newport News, Va.
"He was just visibly really shaken up," Grady said of Moye. "I don't think he even saw those girls. I really don't."
Shoppers say the parking lot is always bustling.
"It's terrible," Shopper Karen Atkins said. "I know it gets real busy in here on the weekends and I know a lot of people don't slow down in the parking lots."
Moye was not injured and was allowed to leave the scene with his family.
Smithfield police and the State Highway Patrol are still investigating what caused the collision.
