REIDSVILLE, N.C. – The confederate memorial in Rockingham County is in pieces after being hit by a vehicle. Reidsville police say a Greensboro man fell asleep at the wheel Monday and drove into the monument at the roundabout at Morehead Street.

The force of the crash knocked the head of the confederate soldier atop the pedestal to the ground.

Mayor James Festerman says he'd like to hear from the community about replacing the monument.

"It has strong emotions in our community, and strong feelings, and we're going to be very sensitive to those feelings as to how we proceed in the future to replace it,” said Festerman.

Damage is estimated at $4,000.

The monument has stood in the intersection since 1910.
