HOLLY RIDGE, N.C.—A mock shooting exercise helps Onslow County put together an emergency plan if ever there was a shooting on school grounds.
Several law enforcement agencies gathered for training at Dixon Middle School on Monday.
The Columbus Day holiday meant the building was empty, giving officers plenty of time to map out a plan of action. The goal is to soon have a detailed response plan for the entire county.
"Understand that we are training because we need to do it. We need to make sure our children are safe. That's what a parent wants because I am a parent, I know it," Major Shawn George with the Onslow County Sherriff's Office said.
"If you do not exercise and not plan for it, you're not going to be prepared and it take all of these entities. EMS cannot practice it themselves, by themselves, law enforcement can't practice, it's all like a puzzle," Director of Emergency Services with Onslow County Norman Bryson said
The school system hopes to hold more training exercises throughout the county next year.
