GASTONIA, N.C. – Jury selection began Monday in the Taras McGirth second-degree murder trial.
McGirth is charged with killing 21-year-old Andy Hovis in 2010. Investigators say McGirth crossed a double yellow line on Dallas-Cherryville Highway, crashing into Hovis.
According to family members, Hovis was on his way to Gaston Community College – he was a broadcasting student – when the accident occurred.
At the time of the accident, investigators say McGirth had a medical condition that caused him to drive erratically. He was charged with second-degree murder and felony death by vehicle.
There is a foundation set up in Hovis's name and a skate park named after him in Cherryville.
