CHARLOTTE — A WalletHub.com survey ranked Charlotte near the bottom of its list of America's best and worst cities for recreation.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Parks and Recreation Director Jim Garges said he sees the need for more parks and greenways in the area, but that funding is a limiting factor. He said building just one mile of greenway costs the city about $1 million.
"If you got $100 million need for greenways, against all the school issues, against all the other stuff the county has to pay for, the taxpayer, just like your home, you can only do so much," Garges said.
Garges said the department has $90 million of ongoing park construction projects in the county. He said the goal is to have a park or recreation center within six blocks of every Charlotte resident.
