CHARLOTTE — The disappearance of Erica Parsons, 15, has moved into the national spotlight after her adoptive parents, Casey and Sandy Parsons, appeared on the television show 'Dr. Phil'.
It's a two-part interview that aired Tuesday and concludes on Wednesday. The Parsonses say they haven't done anything wrong and maintain that Erica Parsons is still alive and living in Asheville with her biological grandmother Irene Goodman, who they call "Nan."
"After meeting Nan, I trusted her 100 percent. Erica felt safe with Nan, too. She immediately took a liking to Nan," said Erica's adoptive mother Casey Parsons during her appearance on the “Dr. Phil” show.
Dr. Phil McGraw says his team worked to find Irene Goodman but came up with nothing.
"We found 13 I believe, seven alive, and none of them have any connection to this case," said Dr. Phil.
But the Parsonses maintain they believe Erica is with her.
The couple also told host Dr. Phil McGraw that some of their family members have repeatedly lied in the past about them abusing their children. They also said Erica spent a year living with a sister when she was 5 years old.
“[They said] that we have beat her from head-to-toe. And then when they come to our house the next day, they stripped Erica all the way down to her socks and found nothing. But these reports kept coming in,” said Casey Parsons.
The results of a polygraph test the Parsonses took on the show will be shown on Wednesday.
This is the couple's first national TV interview, but Erica Parsons' disappearance made nationwide headlines Monday when Nancy Grace discussed the case on her show on HLN.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children confirms that Erica Parsons is now listed on their website.
The center describes Erica's status as “endangered missing”. The center is working on an age progression photo of Parsons that would show what she might look like today.
The Parsonses filmed their interview with Dr. Phil early last week before their home was searched by the FBI, the SBI and the Rowan County Sheriff's Office.
The Parsonses have not been charged with any crime.
