RALEIGH—After a bill moved at a fast pace through the Senate last week, it's now up to the state House to debate whether or not to change North Carolina abortion laws.

It has been one week since lawmakers first introduced amendments to the bill that would alter the state's laws. The House Health and Human Services Committee is set to debate the bill Tuesday.

The proposal does several measures the House has already signed off on, such as making it illegal to have sex selection abortions, and dictating that local governments can not use taxpayer funds to help fund medical plans that offer abortions.

New measures in the bill include provisions to require doctors to be in the room during the entire abortion procedure and requiring hiring regulations for facilities that perform abortions.

Lawmakers will hear from opposition Tuesday, with a rally scheduled at 9 a.m. outside of the legislative building with pro-choice supporters.

The proposal originated in the House, so it will need need one concurrence vote on the floor before it would be sent to the governor for consideration.
