RALEIGH -- Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward will miss the next six to eight weeks following an injury sustained in Sunday night's 3-2 win against the Florida Panthers.
Carolina General Manager Jim Rutherford announced Monday that Ward was diagnosed with a third-degree sprain of the medial collateral ligament (MCL). Surgery will not be required.
Ward has a 9-6-1 record with a 2.84 goals against average and a .908 save percentage this season. The team is 17th in the NHL in goals against. At 12-8-1, the Hurricanes lead the Southeast Division.
Dan Ellis, who replaced Ward midway through Sunday's game, will likely share starts with Justin Peters while Ward is out.
