CHARLOTTE – New rankings put Charlotte-Douglas International Airport in the top 10 for most expensive major airports.

Let's Fly Cheaper put Charlotte eighth.

"It seems like we have a very captive market with US Airways, hence we don't have much competition with the discount flyers, like Southwest, others that are price competitive," said airfare specialist Dave Morrow.

Morrow says there are several reasons why an airport could be more expensive. If it's a hub, if it doesn't have low-airfare carriers and if the airport has higher fees or operational costs.

Some passengers agree with the ranking and think Charlotte's prices could be more competitive.

"We did a bid on it, it wasn't that bad but in order to get an early flight, you have to pay extra then you have to pay for your baggage. It's getting pretty expensive," said Indianapolis traveler Mary Davis.

Others feel the airport is a good option.

"My company pays for it. They do fly me out of here because it's cheaper than for me to fly out of Greensboro,” said Demetrius Meade, of Charlotte.

"I was pleasantly surprised with this. It was going to cost $400 more to fly out of Charleston," said Joyce Walker, of Charleston.

Lets Fly Cheaper says the national round trip average is $384.81. They say Charlotte's average flight is $410.
