RALEIGH--North Carolina State head football coach Tom O'Brien has been fired.

N.C. State Athletic Director Deborah Yow announced the decision and held a press conference on Sunday afternoon.

She said she wants N.C. State to be a perennial contender.

"Coach O'Brien and I met Friday to discuss the future of the program. I spent the last two days thinking about that conversation before meeting with him again this afternoon. Ultimately I decided to move in another direction to try to reinvigorate the program toward reaching the competitive goal of becoming a perennial top 25 football program," said Yow.

O'Brien coached the team for six seasons and compiled an overall record of 40-35.

Offensive coordinator Dana Bible will serve as the team's interim head coach in the upcoming bowl game.

Yow said a national search for a replacement will begin immediately.
