NEWPORT, N.C. — A nationwide Amber Alert has been issued for a missing Carteret County girl.

The Carteret County Sheriff's Office says Abigale Lefevers, 12, has been missing since Sunday night. Law enforcement officials believe Lefevers may be with a registered sex offender.

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Timothy Newman, 38, for child abduction. Newman has a prior conviction for a sex offense involving a 14-year-old girl in 2003 in Stokes County.

Authorities say Newman may be traveling with Lefevers in a red 1998 Chrysler Sebring with NC license plate AKT-6534.

The vehicle was last seen Monday near the South Carolina border. Authorities say Newman was communicating with Lefevers over the past several weeks.

Investigators say the Amber Alert is generating many leads.

"We have a lot of information right now that we're receiving via the Amber Alert. We've got a lot of calls from South Carolina. We've got some from Georgia and we're receiving some from other states," said Chief Deputy Ken Raper of the Carteret County Sheriff's Office.

Lefevers is about 90 pounds and was last seen wearing Nike shoes and carrying a pink backpack with peace signs. Investigators ask anyone with information to call the Carteret County Sheriff's Office at 252-504-4800.
