CHARLOTTE -- Possible threats of violence in Charlotte during the Democratic National Convention come as no surprise to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Chief Rodney Monroe said the threat is nothing new and his department is aware of it. The possible threat of violence comes from anarchist extremists.

The FBI and Homeland Security released an eight page bulletin on the threat and neither agency is commenting further.

The video, released on YouTube, came out Aug. 14, the joint intelligence bulletin released on Tuesday. The message from Anonymous says they are not terrorists but they are to be expected. Video shows protestors clashing with law enforcement officers and people dressed all in black damaging buildings and police cars.

The warning from the FBI and Homeland Security talks of potential threats. It says the most serious threat during both the RNC and the DNC comes from anarchist extremists. It also says they are willing to use explosive devices and they tend to target financial institutions , commercial businesses, government and law enforcement.

Monroe says his department has seen the video and has planned accordingly. He doesn't want that to disrupt peaceful protests or other events surrounding the convention in September.

"I don't want that to overshadow the majority," said Monroe. "The majority of people who are coming here are coming to express their views and go home."

The same threats and warnings are in effect for Tampa and the RNC. Monroe and several staff headed to Tampa to observe and learn from their operations.
