CHARLOTTE – As NASCAR crew members on the floor of Time Warner Cable Arena fought for every second Thursday night, in the stands, loved ones in the stands soaked up every second of the moment.
The annual Pit Crew Challenge is one of the few times during the NASCAR season that Charlotte area spouses, families and fiancees of the crew members can watch their heroes from their home city.
“It's really nice to have them all home and have them close, this is a big event for them,” said Kirby Johnson of Charlotte.
“It's really exciting and it means a lot because they are gone so much,” said Melissa Hunt of Charlotte.
While supporters can also feel and breathe the adrenaline of the competition up close.
“It's a huge stage, and everyone is so close, and they can hear all the fans, where at the race track they are a little further away,” said Johnson.
Even though they cheered on crew members from different teams that were competing for the same prize, Hunt and Johnson still enjoyed the camaraderie.
“It is a little nerve wracking,” said Hunt. “We have our fingers crossed, and we're hoping for the best, but at the same time, it's a fun event.”
“There's a little friendly competition, we have competition making our signs and you know, yelling the loudest, but overall we just really want everyone to have a good time and be safe,” said Johnson.
