CHARLOTTE—It is the largest single-day food drive and it is taking place Saturday in the Carolinas and nationwide.

Saturday marks the 20th annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive, coordinated by the Campbell Soup company and the National Association of Letter Carriers. As mail carriers head out to drop off mail and pick up any outgoing items, they will also be collecting bag upon bag, full of food to help those in need.

The food drive is easy to participate in. Neighbors come together by filling bags, which have been delivered to homes over the past week, with non-perishable food items. Last year in Charlotte alone, more than 275,000 pounds were collected.

All of the food collected heads straight to local food banks and pantries in the areas in which it is collected in order to help meet the demand.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the need is high and reports that last year, 49 million Americans were living in food insecure homes.

It is not too late to participate. If you did not receive a specific bag, fill a similar bag with non-perishable items, before your mail carrier comes around for collection Saturday. ClientIP: UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
