CHARLOTTE – Hundreds of people attended a human trafficking conference and expo in south Charlotte on Friday night.

The event was hosted by the group Compassion to Act. It featured guest speakers, including a victim, and dozens of advocacy groups from across the state.

Organizers say most people would be surprised to know how common human trafficking is in North Carolina.

“It is happening and has been happening for a long time; we just haven't heard a lot about it. Events like this help raise that banner and lets them know there is help when they need it,” said Mike Sexton, with the Mecklenburg County Women's Commission.

Organizers say North Carolina is 10th in the country for human trafficking. They say the problem could get worse during the Democratic National Convention because of the large crowds.
