Charlotte kidnapping 911 call

Listen to the 911 call about a teen kidnapped from southeast Charlotte here.

CHARLOTTE -- A 911 call offers more details into a panicked 12-year-old's plea for help.

The young girl, kidnapped by her uncle in southeast Charlotte Saturday was able to escape and run for help.

You can hear her crying in the background as the Georgia couple who found her, called 911. Now the suspect, Cristino Leon, sits in the Mecklenburg County Jail, charged with two counts of kidnapping.

"I have a little girl that is just screaming sitting right here in the middle of the road, says this guy tried to take her," said the 911 caller. "She's really shaken up, she's crying like crazy, she's just, she don't look injured, she's just screaming."

You can hear the child in the background, crying as she tries to explain who she is and what happened.

Police said Cristino Leon kidnapped his niece Saturday in southeast Charlotte, and made it hours south on Interstate 85, before the child escaped in Jefferson, Ga. Leon was later arrested in Spartanburg County, S.C. and brought back to Charlotte.

Doors in the Silver Oak neighborhood were littered with fliers Monday, reminding residents the kidnapping was not random and thanking them for their cooperation with police.

"How could someone that stays like three to four doors down from me, kidnap his own niece?" asked neighbor Keshia Elliot. "Who can kidnap their own flesh and blood?”

Leon is charged with first- and second-degree kidnapping and is in the Mecklenburg County Jail under a $250,000 bond. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said there is a detainer on Leon.
