RALEIGH — An amendment that would change membership requirements for the NCHSAA failed to get enough votes to pass on Thursday.

The vote means several Catholic schools will remain in the association and will compete against public schools next year.

Commissioner Davis Whitfield said the association will immediately form a committee to get all schools together to come up with ways to maintain a level playing field between the public and private schools.

"I think we sit down at the table; we understand what's important for each aspect and each entity as it relates to our association and what works for all of us involved and find a win-win situation as it relates to all 390 member schools,” said Whitfield.

In order for the amendment to pass, 293 votes in favor were needed. The breakdown of votes are as follows:

234 - Yes
51 - No
105 - No vote entered

The public schools proposed the amendment because those parochial schools get athletes from farther distances. In some cases, there was a perception the schools offer financial aid to entice quality players

But one of the principals countered that argument.

"It was given to families based on their need in attending the school and so when people understood that it was independent of any process with the school I think they felt comfortable that there wasn't any sort of allegations or an issue with recruiting student-athletes,” said Jason Curtis, principal of Cardinal Gibbons High School.

The board is asking members to give input and recommendations at its board meeting in December.
