BLADEN COUNTY, N.C. – The Bladen County Sheriff's department released a tape of a 911 call made minutes before a 20-year-old woman's body was found in the middle of the road in Bladen County.

Dispatchers received the call around 4:40 a.m. Sunday, when a concerned woman called after a young woman at her door wanted a ride.

"I don't know who she is," the caller said. "I think she's intoxicated because I can't understand what she is saying. And I can't bring her into my house."

Just 15 minutes later, dispatchers got another unsettling call.

"There's a body in the road," the caller said. "A woman got ran over."

When sheriff's deputies arrived at Pleasant Garden Road, they found 20-year-old Amber Babson dead in the street.

"When first responders arrived, they found the body of Ms. Babson in the highway had been struck by a vehicle," Sheriff Stephen Bunn said.

It's still unclear how Babson died.

"We still don't have sufficient evidence to really determine if this was a deliberate act or if this was an accident, a hit-and-run traffic accident," Bunn said.

The Highway Patrol and State Bureau of Investigation have been called in to help investigate her death. They want to figure out who was behind the wheel when Babson was hit.

Services for Babson will be held on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. at the Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourne, N.C. Babson is survived by her parents. ClientIP: UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
