RALEIGH -- The mother of a murder suspect who killed himself in prison says the state did not do enough to protect him.
According to a News and Observer report, Sarah Chandler, mother of Drew Planten, has filed a claim against the state. She says her son had a stress disorder and that it worsened when he was in prison.
The attorney general's office is asking for the claim to be dismissed.
Planten was accused of killing 23-year-old Stephanie Bennett in her north Raleigh apartment in 2002 and was linked to another homicide in Michigan.
