CHARLOTTE – The Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services works to minimize delays for customers who receive benefits through the NC FAST system.
The statewide program is designed to allow families to apply for food stamps and other assistance electronically in order to save time and reduce fraud. Some counties reported delays of five to 10 business days while the system got up and running.
Mecklenburg County says it is temporarily adding staff members to help customers get the information they need.
"Just simply customers calling in and working and hearing from our staff have really helped them to understand this is a state system that Mecklenburg is required to implement. So they're staying patient and they're utilizing the resources we've made available for them," said Rodney Adams, of the Mecklenburg County DSS.
DSS is also partnering with the Second Harvest Food Bank and Loaves and Fishes to make sure that families get food in a timely manner.
