CHARLOTTE -- Planning for the Democratic National Convention kicked into high gear Tuesday with the announcement of two key committees both charged with making the event a success for everyone involved.

While most of the members of the host and steering committees are noted Democrats, a handful of Republicans are also on board to lend their voices to the process.

Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx and Duke Energy CEO Jim Rogers will co-chair the Host Committee, serving as a link between the convention and the people.

"They will communicate to the constituents and interest groups they represent about convention planning activities and opportunities to participate," Foxx said.

Former Mayor Harvey Gantt will chair the Steering Committee, serving as an advisory role to the staff and leadership of the Committee for Charlotte.

"Their collective voice will ensure that Charlotte's story is told authentically to the broadest possible audience," said Gantt.

The Republicans on the committees say while they may not agree with the overarching political message, this event is more about Charlotte, and its success will shine a spotlight on the city.

“The Democrats are coming and I'm committed to helping the host committee and the steering committee make it a great convention for the city," said Republican Charlotte City Council member Andy Dulin.

Dulin says for the next 340-plus days, he'll do whatever he can to ensure a safe and profitable convention for all involved, regardless of party affiliation.

Fund-raising was also brought up during Tuesday's news conference. Host Committee Executive Director Dan Murrey didn't give specific numbers, only saying the effort is going well. ClientIP: UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
