PINEVILLE, N.C. — Some Rowan-Cabarrus Community College students are getting specialized training to help put them back on the job.

The training is part of the Back-to-Work Initiative. Ten students will spend three weeks getting heavy equipment training from Kannapolis-based Wayne Bros.

"We are hoping that we will be able to employ all of them. That's our goal," said Milton Chicas of Wayne Bros Inc.

Rowan-Cabarrus Community College was awarded more than $300,000 in grant monies by the North Carolina Chamber of Commerce to support the program.

"It's a great blend of classroom training and the nitty gritty as well as that field work," said Paula Dibley with Rowan-Cabarrus Community College

Cody Troutman is one of the students enrolled in the program.

"If you told me to build a wall before I would have went and got some sticks and said, 'There's your wall,' said Troutman.

Troutman is not only unemployed, he is also homeless. However, he is hoping the construction training program will help him get back on his feet.

"I'm hoping that they will hire me. Maybe I won't start out as a carpenter but throw me in there with the shovel. I'll be all right," said Troutman.

"Our students who graduate from this program who finish will leave not only with that opportunity to apply with Wayne Brothers but also with serval different certifications," said Dibley.

Certifications include commercial construction and carpentry. All skills that could help the students get back in the workforce and out of the unemployment line.
